Located in the vibrant Callowhill neighborhood of Philadelphia, this project creates a dynamic blend of creative and community spaces that honor the city’s rich legacy of craftsmanship. Rooted in the industrial heritage of the area, the design establishes both a conceptual connection to Philadelphia’s history of makers and a physical link to the adjacent viaduct, now repurposed as a thriving rail park. The building’s strategic orientation frames key views of both the viaduct and the city skyline, reinforcing its relationship with the surrounding urban fabric while fostering a sense of continuity between past and present.

This project specifically highlights metal fabricators, recognizing their crucial role in shaping Philadelphia’s industrial and railroad history. The building’s steel-clad facade serves as both a functional and symbolic expression of this legacy, responding dynamically to environmental conditions through a system of modular panels mounted on an external metal framework. The West facade, designed to withstand Philadelphia’s prevailing winds and heavy rainfall, is predominantly solid and incorporates aqua panels for water collection. This innovative system addresses the city's aging and overburdened water infrastructure by harvesting rainwater, reducing strain on municipal resources while supplying clean water for internal building functions and site irrigation.

In contrast, the South and East facades embrace openness, maximizing natural light and transparency through expansive curtain walls. To enhance energy efficiency and user comfort, these facades integrate a series of adjustable shading panels, offering occupants control over sunlight exposure and privacy as needed. The shading elements, designed with a pattern derived from optimal water collection studies, ensure visual continuity between the stationary and movable components while reinforcing the building’s sustainable ethos.

Beyond its architectural expression, this project serves as a bridge between past and future, merging industrial heritage with contemporary innovation.
